3-Row Edging 1931 Marie Haase
In the pages of the Needlecraft Magazine 1931 Oct. pg. 31 Vol. XXIII No. 2 I found a set of three edgings designed by Marie Haase. As seen in the photo each of them was sewn to a header of fabric. This makes it easy to reuse the lace and sew it more easily to clothing, too. This one caught my eye as it looks rather like a line of dancers rapidly moving across the page.
It is tatted in three rows with the first row being one shuttle work only and rows 2 and 3 being all chains. In two places the chain joins twice into one picot which created the look of a ring. It is important that the picots maintain regularity in length.
Row 1 using one shuttle or needle and ball thread begins with a ring.
R 6 - 6 - 6 - 6 close ring (clr) do not reverse work (dnrw)
Leave more or less 1/2" or 1.25 cm bare thread. Adjust length of thread to accommodate larger or finer thread. This thread will be basted to the header later.
*R 6 + (join to last picot of previous ring) 6 - 6 - 6 clr dnrw.
Repeat from * for length needed.
Row 2 is all chains so 2 shuttles may be used or one shuttle or needle and ball thread.
Attach thread to a joined picot of ring in row 1. Note in the photo that only the upper leg of the picot is used for the join.
CH **+ 7 + (join to middle picot of ring) 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 + (join to same picot) 7
Repeat from * across.
Note that the picots formed on the chain (which joins back on itself to look like a ring like a faux ring) need to be regular in length as they are highly visible.
Row 3 is an elaboration of row 2 with all chains so 2 shuttles may be used or one shuttle or needle and ball thread.
Attach thread to a picot of faux ring in row 2. Note in the photo the short chain between these joins.
CH ** 2 + (join to picot of faux ring in row 2) 2 - 2 + (join to middle picot of faux ring) in row 2) 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 + (join to same picot) 2 - 2 + (join to last picot of same faux ring)
Repeat from * * across.
This is really cute and allows for personalization with beads or changes of thread color.
